(Believing in Girls)
Dream B.I.G. (Believing in Girls) is a student-led mentoring program run through the Volunteer Action Center. The program partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas to empower and encourage young women to take on leadership roles in their community and better understand their impact through mentorship.
We began as an alternative spring break in the Arkansas Delta in 2010. Our team traveled to KIPP Delta Charter School and found a need for positive role models for the young girls who faced issues of poverty, neglect, abuse, and high drop-out rates.
In 2011, the program partnered with Marvell-Elaine High School for an overnight camp during spring break and then later a camp at Elaine High School over winter and fall breaks. Dream B.I.G. sought to create a “cultural shift” for its girls that would engage and inspire them to succeed and overcome challenges.
Seeing the need within Northwest Arkansas, the program moved to JO Kelly in Springdale in 2015. Two years later, we partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas.
Who We Are
Dream B.I.G. (Believing in Girls) is a student-led mentoring program of the Volunteer Action Center. Through a year-long commitment, student volunteers have the opportunity to mentor middle school girls.
The program partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters Northwest Arkansas and J.O. Kelly Middle School in the Springdale School District.
What We Do
University of Arkansas women serve as mentors (Bigs) and are matched with 6th and 7th grade girls (Littles) at J.O. Kelly Middle School. The program consists of monthly Brave Girl sessions that focus on identity development through community support, cultural awareness, and one of a kind programming.
How to Get Involved
RetuStudents can volunteer as mentors. Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, university students (bigs) are matched with JO Kelly students (littles).
Mentors will meet once a month for training sessions and Brave Girl Sessions. Bigs will also have the opportunity to have lunch with their littles each month.
